James Cunningham (BBS, MBS, PhD) is a college lecturer in strategic management in the Department of Management, a research fellow for Centre for Innovation and Structural Change and EMBA Programme Director at National University of Ireland, Galway. Prior to joining NUI, Galway he lectured in the Department of Business Administration, at University College Dublin and worked as a strategy consultant. His research interests encompass three main areas namely, strategy practice, strategy and the environment and entrepreneurship with a specific interest in commercialisation and technology transfer. His research has merited national and international distinction. James was awarded the Lord Edward Memorial Bursary to purse his PhD studies. James won the public sector category of the Irish Case Writing Competition and the European Case Writing Award organised by the European Foundation for Management Development for a case study on the Reform of the Irish Ports. In 2004 he won a case writing competition organised by Enterprise Ireland and the Irish Academy of Management. He has won two best paper awards at the British Academy of Management (2002 and 2005) and the Irish Academy of Management and has published his research in a number of leading journals including Business Strategy Review. Furthermore, his co-authored book Enterprise in Action now in its second edition and he has completed commissioned reports for Udáras na Gaeltachta, Forfás and ICSTI and CISC. The reports for Forfás and ICSTI examined the commercialisation of non-commissioned research and more recently a CISC report commissioned by NUI, Galway examined university technology transfer �Varieties of Excellence: A Review of International Best Practice Pertaining to the Structure, Activities and Responsibilities of Industrial Liaison Offices�. In addition, James has made a number of presentations on the subject of technology transfer and intellectual property and his co-authored (with Brian Harney) book entitled Strategically Managing University Technology Transfer will be published by Oak Tree Press later this year.
