Tom Gormley joined CISC in October 2002 as a recipient of a Ph.D. Studentship in the High Performance Systems group, working with Professor Bill Roche of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College Dublin. He has also been (separately) awarded a Government of Ireland Scholarship in respect of his studies towards the degree of PhD, by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Tom Gormley's thesis for his M.A. in Mass Communications at the University of Leicester analysed RTE's response to the crisis in European public service broadcasters. He was previously awarded a B.A. in industrial relations from the National College of Industrial Relations in Dublin. He has extensive industrial relations experience, including as a former Secretary of the RTE Trade Union Group and later as leader of a trade union team engaged in a review of RTE.
