David Charles holds the David Goldman Chair of Business Innovation and is Director of Research in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Business School. David also co-ordinates the research group on Innovation, Learning and Knowledge. David has a wide range of research interests, which include innovation management, the role of universities in regional development, corporate restructuring, regional technology policy and urban development. He recently led a major EU TSER project on universities and regional development (UNIREG) along with a range of other projects on the regional role of universities and their collaboration with business. Recent work on higher education business interaction for the Higher Education funding Councils and Office of Science and Technology has attracted considerable policy and press interest. Building on these he leads the CURDS Marie Curie Training Site on Advanced Research Training in University Region Interaction. David has also been undertaking work on innovation in clusters for OECD and regional development agencies. His other research interests include research into the role of cities in regional competitiveness.
